Category: Events

Oakdale Cemetery is an incomparable gathering place for history in the heart of Wilmington, graced with thousands of immaculately crafted grave markers and nearly two centuries of stories.

Join us as we welcome our first speaker of the year, Eric Kozen, Oakdale Cemetery Superintendent, as he explores how the craft of funerary art has preserved and immortalized these stories since the cemetery opened in 1855, as well as the history of some of its most well-known residents.

Admission is Free; donations are appreciated.
Masks are required.

Guests can also attend virtually. Those interested can e-mail [email protected] to register.

Throughout the spring, the Burgwin-Wright House will host monthly speakers to talk about a wide variety of topics. Also on the calendar will be a lecture about the Revenue Cutter Service’s roots in Wilmington dating back to 1790, and a look at growing and caring for bonsai trees in the region.

The lecture series is part of Burgwin-Wright’s mission to welcome the community to the historic site for free educational presentations that enrich its understanding of the region’s natural and historical features.

Oakdale Cemetery was first incorporated in 1852 and remains the final resting place of thousands of residents, including members of some of Wilmington’s defining families. Located on 15th Street, the cemetery is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day. Learn more about its history, including a burial database, at www.oakdalecemetery.org.
