From the Artist
The pandemic has given me the opportunity to paint every day, with no distractions and few interruptions. At first I worked in my traditional style, but after a few months, I was ready to experiment with new techniques, new subject matter and new media. I tried gouache, tried acrylics once again, began to work more abstractly. I looked at work from last year and updated it with less concern for the outcome. I dug through my box of scrap paper and worked in collage. With all travel at a stand-still, I went through my photos from long ago trips and painted scenes from Sedona and SanFrancisco.

I embraced the quarantine, and worked more than ever before. I made lemonade from lemons!

About the Artist
Painting is a major part of my life. I have a studio in my house and I am there most days. I used to wonder how someone could practice the piano for 6 or 8 hours a day. Now I understand. When you are doing what you love, it is joyful. There are challenges, whether it is a facial expression or a foggy sky. Every day there are new frustrations and also small successes. My paintings sometimes go through the "ugly" stage. I put them aside for a few days or sometimes weeks. When I look at them again, I almost always know how to proceed. I often do several paintings of the same subject trying different approaches each time. I especially like to start with a black canvas, and let the black peak out here and there.

I carry my camera and a sketch book everywhere and have a huge stash of photos and drawings. I enjoy looking at something ordinary and mundane and creating a thing of beauty. I sometimes work plein air but I will admit it is hot in NC. Sometimes I paint loose and bright in a style I call Impressionism; other times I paint flat and matt, simplifying the subject into shapes.

I studied art in college, but everything I know about painting I learned in the last eight years. I've taken classes at Cameron Museum, on-line classes, and many workshops from NY to Fl. It is amazing how much you can learn in a few short days with a great teacher....and lots of practice.

I have lived in Leland NC since 2012, and am a member of Wilmington Art Association, Art League of Leland, and the Oak Island Art Guild. For several years I was on the steering committee for Collage Artists of Wilmington. I do illustrations for comicphonics.com and recently illustrated 5 books for beginning readers. I also teach adult classes called 2HourArtist. These classes are designed for people with little or no experience. I’m proud to say that I have opened up a new world for many people. I’ve exhibited at LCAC, Caprice Bistro, Loveys, Art Factory, ACES, Sunset River Marketplace, Landfall, Cameron Art Museum, Leland Cultural Arts Center, Cape Fear Artist, Fine Art Gallery in Mayfair, Bellamy Mansion and Franklin Square Gallery. I was a New Yorker in my previous life, where I taught art in the public schools.
