Long before the U.S. Coast Guard existed in its current form, the Wilmington riverfront was a notable host of its predecessor, the Revenue Cutter Service.

Starting with the original Diligence vessel, which was first stationed on the Wilmington waterfront starting in 1790, Katy Menne, curator of education for the N.C. Maritime Museum at Southport, will look at the region’s role in this federal agency and how the Cape Fear began its two-century reputation as a protector of the East Coast.

Throughout the spring, the Burgwin-Wright House will host monthly speakers to talk about a wide variety of topics. Also on the calendar will be a lecture on growing and caring for bonsai trees in the region. The lecture series is part of the museum’s mission to welcome the community to the historic site for free educational presentations that enrich its understanding of the region’s natural and historical features. Burgwin-Wright House and Gardens is located at 224 Market Street in downtown Wilmington.

About the Speaker
Menne is a graduate of the University of South Carolina and has been with the N.C. Maritime Museum since 2018. She has spearheaded several projects and initiatives with the museum in recent years, including securing the distinction as the first Certified Autism Center in North Carolina. A Certified Educator by National Geographic, she was recently named one of WILMA Magazine’s Women to Watch for 2021.
